St. JOHN presents

Hepple Gin Tasting and Snacks, with Valentine Warner

9 October 2018 - 7:00pm

Hepple Gin is made in the moorland wilds by Hadrian’s Wall, on the beautiful Hepple Estate. Chef, best-selling author and Hepple co-founder Valentine Warner says “We have always felt that there was something in the raw, life-giving wilds of Hepple that we wanted to bottle and share”. And they have succeeded! In a saturated market they use highly pioneering and complex distilling methods, but a strong focus on the traditional Juniper which they felt was being neglected elsewhere. “Juniper” says Valentine “has been described as tasting like a cold wind from a mountain. That was the overall flavour that we were chasing”. The green, young juniper that grows in the stunning estate helps achieve this goal, along with Douglas Fir, bog myrtle, lovage, blackcurrant leaf, fennel and more.

To start your evening’s gin journey there is that purest and most delicious expression of the spirit at its finest: a Gin Martini “painfully cold and painfully dry”, just as Fergus Henderson likes it! And as a pairing, a companion both in flavour profile and decadence, the Oysters Rockefeller. Then on to an autumnal surprise: a beetroot cocktail with its sweet earthy notes cutting through the rich cured trout: Scotland by way of Scandinavia!

The Army and Navy shows an orgeat almondy richness with your crispy curried treats, and to finish there’s a distillate which moves away from juniper – Hepple’s new Douglas Fir liqueur, evocative and fascinating, with the sweet delight that is the St. JOHN Eccles Cake to send you on your merry way. Valentine himself will talk you thorough the good things in your glasses and on your plates, tell you more about the magical alchemy of botanicals, and weave entrancing tales of the landscape and the moors. A heady joy.
