Young Mahler: Symphony No. 1
Southbank Sinfonia Lunchtime Concert
10 November 2017 - 1:00pm
Southbank Sinfonia presents a lunchtime performance that marks the beginning of a new association with The Bridge, welcoming its young professional musicians – as seen in the National Theatre’s Amadeus – to awaken the theatrical spirit of classical music.
Mahler’s symphonies are truly theatrical in scale, calling upon huge orchestral forces to bring their epic statements to life, yet still seem to speak personally to each listener. Here, that intimacy is amplified in Iain Farrington’s ingenious arrangement for 15 musicians, conducted by Leo Geyer, where every player becomes a soloist and hidden aspects of the score are revealed as never before.
As the symphony is opened up, so is Mahler’s psyche: among the musicians, actors will voice the influences that shaped the young composer’s first symphonic steps, painting an impressionistic portrait of an artist on the cusp of greatness.
This daytime event can be complemented with lunch in The Bridge’s bar – a quick work break with a signature St. JOHN sandwich or a more lingering afternoon of small plates in our light-filled foyer.
Tickets: £5 for the concert only, £12 for the concert plus lunch – lunch being a sandwich of your choice and a small glass of wine (125ml) or a tea/coffee.
