A Flute Theatre and Orange Tree Theatre co-production
25 June – 12 July 2019
“… It had to be seen to be believed. I cannot stress this enough, this engaged, entirely committed child was like no other version of my son I have ever seen.”
– Parent. Read their full letter here.
Flute Theatre are returning to the Bridge for three weeks of performances of their production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for children with autism and their families.
Up to 15 people on the autism spectrum become the participants for each performance, sitting with six actors on the stage whilst families and carers sit just behind. The actors invite the participants to help them unravel Shakespeare’s story through sensory games where the children and actors play together. Although the games and the narrative remain the same for each performance, the show is completely different every time depending on the nature of the young people who attend.
The Bridge is wheelchair accessible and the performance is suited to every person with autism spectrum conditions, including those who are entirely non-verbal.
All participants and their guests are welcome to join the cast for tea and biscuits after the performance.
“The silence and calm was magical. It felt almost religious, as though a sacred space had been created, within which something transformative was happening.”
– Parent of Tim, participant at the Orange Tree Theatre
“Phenomenal. The way the cast seemed to entrance and captivate each pupil at any given time was a pleasure to watch.”
“Groundbreaking Shakespeare… a unique theatrical experience — part performance and part workshop — which genuinely puts the sense of play back into Shakespeare and that is truly interactive.” ★ ★ ★ ★
